More poems from the WRITER's WORKSHOP

UNREGARDED
The swan, unregarded, floats alone
on the greening water, its white
reflection, following like a mute
companion, never leaving its side.

 Dark shapes crisscross the rippling
wake of bubbles as overhanging
branches take their first dip
in the shallows.

Jeanette Bramley 17th March 2009

The Fly of the wringing hands:

 Don't kill that poor fly!
 He cowers, wringing
 His hands for mercy.

is from Issa's 'The Spring of My Life'... hence my title:

 Autumn of My Life

Stood on the kerb - traffic blasting dust,
fumes and the thud of banal pop songs
into my orifices - I need to run away
and hang, like a frost-faced ape,
from a branch in the sun.

Listen to a woodland glade, to a wren
that shouts a thin, sweet song. Listen
to a slug rasp along a leaf, to the rattle
and clatter of a beetle, to the hiss of sap,
 the roar of chlorophyll,
 the creak of yawning flowers,
the slurp of a bee’s tongue

 and the faint sandpaper rasp
 of Issa’s cowering fly
 wringing its hands for mercy.

WRITERS' WORKSHOP

Every week the Writers’ Workshop devotes an hour to prose and a hour to poetry. In Poetry we often do an exercise called hot-penning, which usually generates a lot of good work in progress. Unknowingly two members both chose the phrase ‘what the blackbird sang’ from a W.H. Auden poem as their staring point. I felt both were worth sharing with a larger audience, both are ‘work in progress’, but serve as  illustrations of what the group can produce in a morning session.

I hope you enjoy them and can use them in Whaler.

Roger Gould

I don't know what the blackbird sang, but sweetly through the air
The clarion notes of summer rang over the day so fair.
Perhaps it sang of woods and fields, the view from up above.
Perhaps it sang of worms and seeds: it didn't sing of love.
Yet there it sat high in the tree, with warbling throat a-quiver
And o'er the garden lawn there rang a song of stream and river.
Alone it sat, high in the branch and never paused its song
An early morning sentinel - and not one note was wrong.

Sue Morton

I don't know what the blackbird sang
But its song was sweet and loud it rang
It might have told of summer days
Of sunlit fields and ripening hay
Of vast blue skies and poppies red
And glossy wings so swiftly spread
To soar and sweep and glide and dive
Or simply joy to be alive

Whalers Care about health

I have been attending training courses and PPI Health Forum meetings as your representative.

The Health Forum put together a study of the quality of the health services in the Whitby and Esk Valley. The public meetings about the hospital were part of the Forum’s work for that study. These public meetings were very well attended. The people in Whitby care about their hospital and the quality of the services that they receive.

As a result of the views expressed by the people of Whitby and Esk Valley, many of the services have been revised to try to address our concerns. We have assurances about the continuity of our hospital and its services. Ambulance crews have been trained in paramedical work for the speedy treatment of heart problems. Our ‘Out Of Hours’ cover has been looked at and revised. The dental situation is better with most people able to get a NHS dentist. Podiatry and physiotherapy services are being looked into as long waiting lists for treatment have been reported.

These improvements have taken place because we have brought the problems to the notice of the bodies that can affect change.

I have attended two public Health Forum meetings in Pickering where only two members of the public turned up. A similar meeting recently held in Whitby had 40 members of the public present. We had over 80 present at our own ‘Whaler’ health meeting. It makes me very proud that so many Whalers and people in Whitby and the Esk Valley care about Health Service provision. At our Whitby Forum meeting, the problem of transport for Goathland residents to get to Sleights GP surgery, was raised. It is now to be looked at as part of the work of the Forum. We shall be visiting Whitby and Malton Hospitals, GP surgeries and Dental Practices, in Whitby, Esk Valley also Malton, Pickering and Scarborough and considering accessibility and other aspects of concern to patients.

We need your input. If you see a need for improvement in our Health service provision, then let me know and I will see if it can be included in the Work Plan of the Health Forum.
